Hour of Code

Coleytown students are thrilled to be coding in December.  Classes are participating in the worldwide Hour of Code movement.


What is an Hour of Code? "The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts."

Mrs. Syndercombe and the CES community have participated in the Hour of Code for several years.  This year, students explored various coding activities in the computer lab.  Students chose to build basketball games, animate their names, code with Anna & Elsa, or even build a Star Wars galaxy!  Various coding tools were used in these activities.  Teachers even joined in the learning.

We were incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Kassay's sister, Amanda Kassay, come to Coleytown and work with our third graders today.  Ms. Kassay is a software engineer at Google.  She was interviewed on the TV studio about her job.  Click this link to watch her interview.  

Ms. Kassay helped the third graders make original Google Doodles using Scratch.  (Scratch is an online programming tool for students).  Students explored various ways to animate their doodles and learned how to add color, backgrounds, sounds, actions, and much more!

Art Around Coleytown

Have you ever noticed the incredible artwork at Coleytown?  All around the building we have original pieces of art by Westport artists. These pieces are part of the Westport Public Art Collection, which contains nearly 1,500 pieces on display in Westport's public buildings.  
Each month, on CES TV, Coleytown students will be highlighting different pieces of art in a segment named Art in our School. The first painting that we highlighted was American Heritage, the Stevan Dohanos painting in the main office.
This month two fourth grade students decided to highlight a drawing by Catherine Barr titled Young Bears. They researched this artist and created a video to share on our tv studio. The students also challenged the Coleytown community to create their own drawings in crayon that we can showcase in the building. Teachers College December Visits

Our staff developers from Teachers College were back at Coleytown!  They worked with teachers in Kindergarten through fifth grade and modeled small group work and conferences with our students. They also worked with grade levels to plan for upcoming units in writing.

We celebrated our students’ writing progress with the staff developers.  We noticed students are writing for longer periods of time, planning and organizing using a variety of strategies, and employing different elaboration techniques.  In our classroom visits we read second grade “How To” guides (nonfiction), fifth grade literary essays, and first grade informational chapter books. Science PTA Meeting

Last Monday the focus of the Coleytown general PTA meeting was science.  Mr. Pete Alfano, CES Science coach, facilitated an exciting and interactive meeting to help parents learn more about new science curriculum in Westport.  He began by describing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), a set of K-12 content standards developed to improve science education for all students.  NGSS standards are written in terms of performance expectations.  These performance expectations describe what students should be able to do at the end of a unit of study.  The NGSS standards have three dimensions: Disciplinary Core ideas (content), Cross Cutting Concepts (ex: cause/effect, patterns), and Science and Engineering Practices.  


Mr. Alfano immersed parents into the lab by exploring an anchoring phenomena.  This phenomena will be the basis of the entire unit of study.  All of the work students do in the unit will be designed to explore this phenomena.  




Parents observed the two liter bottles filled with hot water and made observations in their table groups.  The "class" then watched a similar phenomena with a tanker car from a real world video.  They answered two questions: How would you describe what you observed (what was the behavior?) How would you explain what you observed (what caused the behavior?)


Why did the tanker car/bottle collapse?  What caused this?


Parents then created models of what they thought happened with the bottle or tanker car.  




Mr. Alfano told the parents: "We are only just getting started. Don't worry if you are not sure about your ideas. The important thing is not to have the one "right answer" at this point. The goal is to try to represent your initial thinking about what is going on in these phenomena, both for yourself and others. These models will help us get our initial ideas on paper so we as a science community can figure out what parts of our models we agree on, and more important, what questions we have that can guide what we need to investigate."


The posters were placed on the lab tables and parents did a gallery walk of other groups' models.  They noticed similarities and differences between their models and their peers.




Parents then wrote down questions on post it notes based on their gallery walk.  These were questions that they still had regarding the initial phenomena.  Mr. Alfano collected the questions and sorted them on to a driving question board.




Mr. Alfano brought the parents together for their first consensus meeting.  The parents ran the meeting (just as your children do) and discussed their observations about the phenomena.  They debated and came to some initial agreement about what they believed happened with the bottle and the tanker.  


Mr. Alfano then described how teachers use the questions from the driving question board to support students' exploration throughout the rest of the unit.  For example, for this phenomena, the parents had questions related to temperature, pressure, time and material.  All experiments throughout the unit of study would help students explore these four areas.  All of the work would relate back to the original anchoring phenomena.  Students would refine their models multiple times as they learned more throughout the unit.  In each unit of study, students are actively making meaning of the scientific concepts.  Instead of teachers spending time instructing explanations, students are constructing the explanations.

Book Fair

The CES PTA is hosting the book fair in the library media center during conference week.


It is a tradition at Coleytown for buddy classes to get together and preview the book fair.  The "older" buddies help the younger buddies choose books for their wish lists.  Below are scenes from buddy classes (Kindergarten and third grade, first grade and fourth grade) today.

Happy Thanksgiving!



Each November, Coleytown staff and students participate in a community outreach event to support the larger Westport community.  Buddy classes get together to create cards and decorations for the annual Saugatuck Congregational Church Thanksgiving dinner.  This dinner is put together to provide a free, full holiday meal for any member of the community, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, age, and/or socio-economic background. The students' cards contain creative humor, poetry and drawings. It is a wonderful opportunity for the children to work with their buddies to support members of the community during the holiday season.

Veterans Day at Coleytown

November 10, 2017

The Coleytown community celebrated Veterans Day today with a Town Hall Meeting.  Please click on the link below to watch a video that we showed at the meeting.

The Student Leadership Council presented information about Veterans Day and how we can honor our veterans.  One way that we will honor our veterans is to take part in a letter writing campaign through Operation Gratitude.  CES students will be making cards and writing letters to send in care packages to veterans.

Another way we will honor our veterans is to support the organization Homes for the Brave.  We will be collecting books at the upcoming book fair for the homeless veterans and their families. 

The Student Leadership Council challenged the CES community to brainstorm other ways that we can support our veterans throughout the year. 

Last, we had fifth grade orchestra students play The Star Spangled Banner and My Country Tis of Thee. 

It was a fabulous meeting!
